Recognized were &#8220;a selection of Dan Washburn&#8217;s engaging          columns. He took readers under the muddy waters of the Mississippi to          experience the sport of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2002\/06\/13\/mississippi-handgrabbing-part-one-man-vs-fish\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;handgrabbing&#8217;          huge catfish<\/a> and around the ice of a hockey rink on the movable throne          of the common man: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2002\/04\/04\/zamboni-drivers-the-ice-men-cometh\/\" target=\"_blank\">the          Zamboni<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001 Georgia          Sports Writers Association:<\/strong> Named state&#8217;s          best sports columnist for newspapers with circulations of 30,000 or less.          Also, won <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2001\/01\/23\/throwing-axe-and-ye-shall-receive\/\" target=\"_blank\">first          place<\/a> in Outdoors Writing for fourth straight year. Took <a href=\"..\/..\/angelperez.html\" target=\"_blank\">first          place<\/a> in Amateur, Non-Scholastic Writing for third year in a row.          Won <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2001\/07\/31\/hiking-tallulah-gorged-on-adventure\/\" target=\"_blank\">second          place<\/a> in Outdoors Writing, as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001 Georgia          Associated Press:<\/strong> Won first place          in Sports Writing for a story that chronicled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2001\/08\/26\/high-school-football-a-day-in-a-coachs-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">a          day in the life<\/a> of a high school football coach, and third place in          Feature Writing for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2001\/01\/21\/firefighting-24-hours-with-station-7\/\" target=\"_blank\">a          first-hand look<\/a> at working a 24-hour shift with firefighters and emergency          medical technicians. Also, won second place in Non-Deadline Reporting          for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2001\/04\/02\/smoking-seven-days-in-a-haze\/\" target=\"_blank\">contribution<\/a>          to newsroom&#8217;s &#8220;The Cost of Smoking&#8221; project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2001 Georgia          Press Association:<\/strong> Won first place          in Sports Writing for a collection of work and third place in Feature          Writing for a collection of work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000 Georgia          Sports Writers Association:<\/strong> Won eight awards          \u00e2\u20ac\u201d more than any other writer in the state \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in the GSWA&#8217;s annual          writing contest. Took <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2000\/01\/18\/caving-dont-go-in-anywhere-you-cant-get-back-out-of\/\">first          place<\/a> in Outdoors Writing for third year in a row. Also earned top          prize in Olympic Story, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2000\/11\/28\/uga-vi-top-dog-rules-bulldog-nation\/\">College          Feature Story<\/a> and <a href=\"..\/..\/accessmain.html\">Amateur,          Non-Scholastic Writing<\/a>, a category that I swept. Won <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/2000\/09\/12\/horseback-riding-honey-beth-hunker-and-godfather-ii\/\">second          place<\/a> in Column Writing and third in High School Deadline Reporting,          as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000 Georgia          Associated Press:<\/strong> Won first place          in Non-Deadline Reporting for the <a href=\"..\/..\/accessmain.html\">outdoors access          package<\/a>, second place in Sports Writing for a feature story about the unique relationship between the Lake Lanier Rowing Club          and a local alternative school for troubled youths, and second place          in Deadline Reporting for news coverage of &#8220;Ice Storm 2000.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999 Associated          Press Sports Editors:<\/strong> A <a href=\"..\/..\/soccermain.html\">1A          Sunday package<\/a> highlighting Gainesville&#8217;s largely-Latino          adult soccer league was named a top-10 finalist for Enterprise Reporting          in the APSE&#8217;s annual national writing contest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999 Georgia          Sports Writers Association:<\/strong> Won a total of          six awards \u00e2\u20ac\u201d including Best Overall Story for a Sporting          Life column about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/1999\/02\/23\/ice-climbing-like-chess-and-russian-roulette\/\">ice climbing<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in the GSWA&#8217;s annual writing          contest. A Sporting Life piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/1999\/02\/02\/rabbit-hunting-i-just-took-a-pot-shot-at-him\/\">rabbit hunting<\/a> was named Best Column. Also swept the Outdoors Writing category, with          Sporting Life entries taking all three awards. Won another first-place          prize in Amateur, Non-Scholastic Writing for an<a href=\"..\/..\/soccermain.html\"> in-depth look<\/a> at Gainesville&#8217;s Largely-Latino adult soccer league.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999 Georgia          Associated Press:<\/strong> A 1A Sunday package on parental behavior \u00e2\u20ac\u201d often misbehavior \u00e2\u20ac\u201d at youth sports events          won Second Place in Sports Writing in the Georgia AP&#8217;s annual writing          contest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998 Best of          Gannett:<\/strong> A selection of Sporting Life          columns was honored in the 22nd annual Best of Gannett contest, which recognizes exceptional work by journalists at Gannett News          Service and the 99 daily Gannett newspapers across the United States.          Sporting Life was awarded Third Place in Sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998 Georgia          Sports Writers Association:<\/strong> A Sporting Life column on Rowing          entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/1998\/10\/13\/rowing-from-the-release-ready-all-row\/\">&#8220;From the release, ready, all row&#8221;<\/a> won First Place in Outdoors Writing in the annual GSWA writing contest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998 National          Shooting Sports Federation:<\/strong> &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwashburn.com\/sportinglife\/1998\/12\/01\/cowboy-action-shooting-call-me-sundance-dan\/\">Call          me Sundance Dan<\/a>,&#8221; a Sporting Life column on Cowboy Action Shooting          was awarded Second Place in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nssf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NSSF<\/a>&#8216;s          &#8220;Good Shots, Great Stories&#8221; contest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2002 Associated Press Sports Editors: Earned fifth place nationally in Enterprise Reporting for contribution to package on knee injuries in female athletes.
