But it&#8217;s clear the place has even the Golden Bear a bit befuddled.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with Bloomberg&#8217;s Shelby Holliday recently, Nicklaus understandably appeared a bit frustrated by the current state of things in China, where the government keeps &#8220;changing the rules every week.&#8221; You can watch the interview \u2014 which focuses on Nicklaus&#8217; design work and the general state of the game globally \u2014 above, but I&#8217;ve transcribed the China section here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>SH: Where is demand the greatest for golf?<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nJN: Right now, it\u2019s really kind of odd because China\u2019s probably the greatest demand for it, but the Chinese government, golf is not recognized as a sport. They haven\u2019t really set what the rules are.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nSH: They change the rules.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nJN: They keep changing the rules every week. That\u2019s because they don\u2019t understand what it is.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Nicklaus Design website says Nicklaus has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicklaus.com\/design\/open-for-play-results.php?criteria=country&#038;criteria_value=China\" target=\"_blank\">18 courses open for play<\/a> in mainland China, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicklaus.com\/design\/under-construction-results.php?criteria=country&#038;criteria_value=China\" target=\"_blank\">three currently under development<\/a> \u2014 although you have to wonder how fast those are moving ahead given the current <a href=\"http:\/\/danwashburn.com\/forbiddengame\/has-the-big-china-golf-course-boom-finally-gone-bust\/\">crackdown on golf courses<\/a> occurring in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the years, golf legend Jack Nicklaus has been one of the most prolific course architects working in China.
